Empathy like charity begins at home. Our mothers are our first empathizers. A mother smiles when the baby smiles, a mother sleeps when the baby sleeps and a mother eats only when the baby eats or has eaten. Our homes and our families are our empathy havens. The moment a child is hurt, his mum & dad are the first ones to reach out to him. The moment she achieves an accolade, her parents cheer her the loudest..and so it goes until they become ready for the world...
So when is empathy lost? An emotion that finds expression right since birth, with our homes & families being the its very first introduction, why do human beings, as they grow and progress, become less empathetic... why are we-grown men & women- in a state of denial to the helplessness of our fellow humans, our friends, our colleagues, our neighbors, our countries?
Perhaps, it’s a learning that needs reinforcement, something like our daily prayers.
One has to practice every day so as not to forget. Practice on one’s own belief system calls upon us to keep our inner child alive. The child that witnessed the virtues of love, caring, sharing, celebrating and crying within the folds of family & community. The child that loved and appreciated gifts of life and nature with wonder & awe; it is within the aura of that childlike self of ours that empathy seeds get nurtured well, and with daily reinforcement, flower generously and leave an impact that touches & uplifts the lives of all that come within its influence.
Strongly empathetic leaders are the most successful. They have the key to peoples’ hearts and can uplift their teams in ways that go far beyond any set of goals & deliverables. Such leaders have an innate capability to speak right unto their team’s inner child and because their leader allows for the little child to be wanting to do all it takes for the pursuit of happiness for himself & his leader, they work best together to force multiply the success scales.
